WPF Performance Suite (x86 version)

The Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) Performance Suite is a set of performance profiling tools that allow you to analyze the runtime behavior of your WPF application.

Important: Before installing the performance suite, be sure to remove older versions of WPFPerf.exe.

This suite of tools includes the following:

· Perforator: for analyzing rendering behavior.

· Visual Profiler: for profiling the use of WPF services, such as layout and event handling, by elements in the visual tree.

· Working Set Analyzer: for analyzing the working set characteristics of your application.

· Event Trace: for analyzing events and generating event log files.

· ETW Trace Viewer: Record, display, and browse Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) log files in a WPF user-interface format.

In addition to UI enhancements for usability, this version of the performance suite includes fixes to all previously known crashes. A 64-bit version is also available.

Visual Studio Flexible Application Template

In order to facilitate switching between app models, Karen Corby has written a “Flexible Applcation” VS template. Check out her blog entry for more on this. It enables you to maintain a single application project file and easily compile as standalone or xbap based on application configuration.

To install, Copy the zip file to “%userprofile%\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Templates\ProjectTemplates\Visual C#”. Don’t unzip the file - just copy the zip file as is. The next time you run Visual Studio, you will see the template as an option under "My Templates".

RenderCapability.Tier registry fix for RC1

The RenderCapability.Tier incorrectly reports some display adapters as Tier 0 on some machines with XPDM divice drivers with the RC1 release of Windows Presentation Foundation. Please see the RC1 release notes for more information.

Since this issue does not prevent the use of hardware acceleration when rendering on either XPDM or WDDM the recommendation is to temporarily ignore the
RenderCapability.Tier API on affected machines.

If testing with the tiering API on RC1 is required this small C# program may work around the issue by deleting HardwareInformation.MemorySize keys which are of type binary and recreating them as DWORDs.

To minimize risk the program will attempt to emit a .reg file to undo any changes made, but modifying the registry is an at your own risk operation and may cause issues with both WPF and non-WPF applications. In the worst case you may be required to reinstall the operating system.

The tiering issue will be addressed in the next release of the WPF. Remember to undo any changes you have made to the registry when you upgrade to the next release.

UI Automation Stress

Worry about the stability of your application and its UI?

Here is a sample that uses the IU Automation API's that come with WPF to stress test your application.

Just run
InvokeStress.exe -pid [processId]
or
InvokeStress.exe -title [windowTitle]

And see if your app can survive being taken through its paces over a 24 hour period.

System.Drawinf.Image Converter to BitmapImage

Here is a Converter that will help you to convert an Image of type System.Drawinf.Image to a BitmapImage.

This will allow you to use your System.Drawinf.Image as an ImageSource of a Image control.
