i’m not sure exactly what happened, but i was pretty amazed today, and i think it was windows vista that did it. let me explain. before i left the house, i put my laptop (compaq nc8430) to sleep when i shut the lid. when i returned, i turned it back on, but all it did was run the fan -- no display, no BIOS, no hard drive activity, nothing. uh oh. i called our IT department, and they had no real answers other than "send it in". (since i work remotely, this isn’t really an easy thing since i’m not on site.) (of course, i just returned from HQ on thursday.) anyhow, i mucked with the battery in and out, on A/C power or not, reseated the memory, nothing. i figured i was hosed. then i looked over on my desk and saw the other laptop -- a compaq nx9420. i figured i could at least test to see if the hard drive was the culprit by installing it in the 9420 and seeing if it got into the BIOS. i quickly swapped the drive, turned it on, and it began to boot. ok, cool, it’s
