  • "Helvetica" (the movie)

The ubiquitous Helvetica typeface is 50 years old this year and currently being celebrated in the documentary Helvetica by Gary Hustwit. We caught it this evening at the IFC Center on 6th Avenue (you know — the site of the old Waverly Theater). I enjoyed the movie immensely. It's even laugh-out-loud funny in spots, and I think anyone with even the slightest interest in typography and graphics design will get a kick out of it. (Check the web site for details.) Helvetica was invented at the Haas type foundry in Switzerland. The original name was Neue Haas Grotesk but that was changed to a word derived from the Latin name for Switzerland. Over the 1960s, Helvetica took the advertising world by storm and was instrumental in modernizing corporate logos and advertisements. It eventually became the default font for much corporate lettering and government signage. Helvetica the documentary takes us on little tours of major cities around the world, showing us how the typeface has blanketed Read More...
  • Free Vector Images for your WPF Projects

If you're from further down the developer end of the designer-developer spectrum chances are you've been avoiding creating your own images, and on the look-out for some good XAML icons and vector images to include in your application, since bitmap images often look blurry . While we included some XAML image resources in the past there are plenty of other good resources out on the web if you know what to look for. Although no graphic designers are sitting at home churning out XAML code per-se, there are plenty of ways to convert the vector content they produce (like SVG files or Adobe Illustrator .ai files) to XAML. Here we've included two sites to get you started, and approaches for converting other vector formats into XAML. OpenClipArt.org is a repository of "open source" vector art stored in SVG format. SVG is an XML-based vector format (and thus you could transform it yourself to XAML if you wished), however there is already an excellent tool from Andrej Benedik from WPF-graphics.com Read More...
  • Blendables

I haven't posted about this yet in my blog because I assumed everyone involved with WPF development already knew about it. IdentityMine is creating a set of utilities for WPF called Blendables . Basically, the focus of Blendables is to provide additional functionality for WPF that is accessible through XAML. One cool example is the Drag-and-drop implemented through an attached property. (Looks like someone finally took my advice on using attached properties to extend functionality). Blendables is very similar to what my initial vision of the WPF Toolbelt. A library that exposes more of the WPF framework directly to XAML with minimum code-behind. It's great to see the third party support really taking off for WPF. While you're at the Blendables website, they are having a contest for people to showcase what Blendables has allowed them to do. Top prize is a 360 Elite. I won't have time to submit a proper entry...I'm busy with other things. Read More...
  • Learn Lisp today and other stuff

Master Jedi Jeff had an itch in between Gallio coding and over on the Gallio contrib coded up a Instrumentation API using Mono Cecil , very sweet. The contrib section is just something that is not on any channel and we keep to throw out our ideas. As Jeff states in his post if other folks like his ideas then it may get developed further, do check out his post and let him know what you think. Wihin Jeffs post I noticed Jason Bock left a comment and I thought 'I know that name', then it struck me, his written two great books that I own, one on IL and the other on Attributes . I also know Jason from his .NET Languages website and ran into a post from Craig Andera on the site . As Craig states I believe it's a good idea to learn at least one new programming language a year . If nothing else, it keeps me from getting bored. You might think I'd choose Ruby, as that's pretty hot right now (in certain circles). And in truth I'm interested. I've even read some of The Pickaxe Book . But the language Read More...

  • ASP.NET Future : SearchDataSource
