If you're into any of the technologies that this blog covers, you'll be mad if you miss the Professional Developers Conference this year. It's actually been three years since our last PDC, so we're overdue! I'm really excited about all the things we're going to be covering at the PDC this year: those of you who have attended the conference in the past will know that we only run a PDC when there is major news to share, and we've got some killer content this year. Registration opened yesterday, so now is a good time to get ahead of the crowd. We keep most of the session titles under wraps until the event starts - this is a future-orientated conference, after all. But even from the session abstracts we've posted so far , you'll see sessions that cover the Live Mesh, Internet Explorer 8, Windows 7 (including details on how to program for the multi-touch feature we showed off this week at Walt Mossberg's D conference ), as well as really hardcore deep-dive sessions on topics like the internals Read More...

The snow has arrived (here in Redmond, at least), and people are starting to wind down for the holidays. No doubt you're dreading the arrival of Aunt Mabel for an extended stay and are planning an opportunity to escape to a remote hideaway cave and finally get a chance to explore some new technologies! Two groups want to capitalize on the extra free time you may have, and have announced a couple of pretty neat contests to which you might well want to pay attention. First up is Lab49 . I don't think I've written about this company before, but they're one of the hottest WPF development houses out there. Based in New York and London, they focus on the financial sector and have a very healthy business creating WPF applications that visualize complex data sets. Today they announced a WPF innovation contest with some awesome prizes including a top-notch Alienware developer workstation, two nights in New York, an Xbox 360 Elite, a signed T-shirt from the WPF team (I must get round to organizing Read More...

People frequently ask me how they can learn WPF quickly. Now the technology has been on the market for a while, there are a number of different choices: books from the likes of Petzold , Moroney , Nathan , MacDonald , Anderson and Sells/Griffiths , classroom training from companies like Pluralsight , Wintellect , Developmentor and IdentityMine , and online tutorials like those from Nibbles or lynda.com . I'm excited to announce another choice today: we've made available a three-day virtual training course that covers all aspects of WPF as part of MIX University, and it's completely free ! This course was delivered here on campus in Redmond earlier this year for a small invited audience, and as we drew up the syllabus and speaker list, we realized we had something special on our hands. You'll hear a keynote from Ian Ellison-Taylor , the general manager responsible for WPF, Silverlight and client platform tools; introductory sessions on core WPF topics from external luminaries like Ian Griffiths Read More...

Summer's here, and that usually means a bit of a slow-down in the office as folk take off on vacation. It's also a great time for some new skills development and training, and as there's a smorgasbord of WPF and Silverlight-related courses taking place over the next few months, I thought I'd take the opportunity to highlight a round-up of the choices available to you, presented in the form of an events calendar: Date Location Course June 28th-29th Los Angeles, CA Designing Windows Experiences with Expression Blend July 2nd-August 10th Bay Area / Online Windows Presentation Foundation (Foothill College) July 16th-18th Atlanta, GA Silverlight Workshop (Dunn Training) July 16th-20th Boston, MA Essential WPF (Developmentor) July 18th-20th Brussels, Belgium Programming with WPF (U2U) July 24th-25th London, UK Windows Presentation Foundation (JBI Training) July 30th-August 1st Sydney, Aus. Our flagship conference for web designers and developers, MIX , starts today in Las Vegas. This event is unlike any other Microsoft conference, with a fascinating mix of internal and external speakers even including a few that are openly hostile towards Microsoft! I know not everyone gets as frothed up about events like this as the blogosphere would have you believe. Neverthelesss, we're using this conference to make a number of major announcements: starting in less than ninety minutes... If you're attending, welcome: hope to catch up with many of you in the corridors and lounges at the venue. If you're not attending, the visitmix.com site will put you in the front seat with on-site video blogging, live keynote streaming and other sessions posted throughout the conference. What I really want to highlight, however, is three beautiful mash-up applications, written on the WPF platform, that demonstrate all the attributes for which we hope this conference will be known: great design, social Read More...

We had a pretty successful online technical chat in December , where we brought about twenty members of the WPF team together to answer your technical questions and listen to your feedback. Based on the response, we're going to host a similar event at the end of this month, covering both WPF and Expression Blend. If you're working on a WPF application as a developer or designer, or even just thinking of using WPF, you'll get a lot of value out of this, I think. Specifically in this chat, as well as general technical Q&A, we'd love to hear even more in the way of feedback from yourselves on what we're doing right and wrong with WPF. What would you like to see in the next release of WPF? We'll hopefully give you a bit of information about our current plans and invite feedback. The chat takes place on Wednesday, February 21st 2007 at 11am Pacific (that's 2pm Eastern, 7pm UK/GMT, 8pm Europe). Use this link to add an appointment to your calendar, and use this link to enter the chatroom on Read More...
